Kaolin

Kaolin – functional filler for many industrial applications

Our natural raw materials are suitable for many different areas of application. In the area of mineral applications, kaolin dominates as an important filler in many industrial applications where it fulfills valuable functions.

What is kaolin?

From a chemical perspective, kaolin is a white rock that consists primarily of the clay mineral kaolinite. The name kaolin goes back to the place where it was first discovered: the city of Gaoling in China. In its pure form, kaolin is always white. But how is kaolin formed? As a weathering product, it is formed when acidic and therefore silicate-rich rocks such as granite and rhyolite are overprinted by hydrothermal fluids. This changes the chemical composition - the rock kaolin is formed.

Typical of kaolin is its density of 2.6 g/cm³, a fine plate-like structure, its low hardness (Mohs hardness of 2.5) and the melting point of around 1,450 °C. There are large deposits of kaolin in China, the USA, Germany, England and Brazil.

Where is kaolin used?

Kaolin has many uses in different areas. For example, kaolin is an important raw material in the production of porcelain. Because it has a high degree of whiteness, a high melting temperature and low shrinkage, it gives porcelain its typical white color and high strength.

In the production of paper, kaolin is used as a filler and white pigment. Kaolin improves the opacity of the paper and thus the print quality. Kaolin makes paper brighter, smoother and more resistant to moisture.

As a functional filler (filler with function), kaolin fulfills important functions in the production of many industrially manufactured products. For example, it is used in the production of paints, varnishes, rubber, plastics, and in adhesives and sealants. Here the fine plates of kaolinite act as a light carrier material, as a plastic adjusting agent and even as a sealing mineral.
